A midweek Bonfire Night splits the season. Halloween is the Saturday before, so the first fireworks weekend competes with trick-or-treating. If you want the calmer version of both, keep Halloween for the Saturday and go to a display on 6–8 November, when most clubs and councils hold theirs.
Council display, club display or something smaller?
- Council displays are the big free or cheap ones. Expect large crowds; walk or arrive early.
- Club and round-table displays (rugby, cricket and football clubs, scouts) are fenced and stewarded, with food vans. Advance tickets are usually cheaper than the gate, and these are the ones that sell out. See what tickets cost this year.
- Pub, farm and school displays are smaller and quieter, and often better for toddlers who want the fireworks further away.
With young children
50 of the displays we track say they suit under-5s or run an early display for young children. Earlier displays beat later ones (each listing shows its start time), the back of the crowd beats the front row, and ear defenders turn a borderline evening into a good one. For a first time, a smaller club display is a gentler start than a city-centre one.
